Cupping & Gua Sha
Cupping and Gua Sha are manual therapies that have been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Patients who are interested in cupping and gua sha should check in with their practitioner to determine if it is an appropriate therapy. Community Acupuncture patients must book a second appointment for cupping, gua sha or tui na; private acupuncture appointments include cupping and gua sha at the practitioners discretion. About Cupping, Gua Sha, and Tui Na at Open Care Community
Cupping, gua sha, and tui na are hands-on therapies used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support circulation, relieve tension, and encourage the body’s natural healing processes. These therapies are often used alongside acupuncture but may also be appropriate as focused, standalone support in certain cases.
All treatments are provided by licensed practitioners trained in these traditional manual techniques.
What to Expect from These Therapies
Cupping
Cupping uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying tissue. This technique is commonly used to address muscle tension, areas of stagnation, and restricted movement. Temporary marks may appear and typically fade within several days.
Gua Sha
Gua sha involves a smooth-edged tool applied to the skin using gentle, repeated strokes. This technique is used to encourage circulation and ease tight or affected areas of the body.
Tui Na
Tui na is a form of therapeutic bodywork that uses rhythmic hand techniques to address musculoskeletal tension and support overall balance.
Your practitioner will determine which modalities are appropriate based on your presentation and treatment goals.
