*Open Care Community practitioners specialize in sports medicine, or trigger-point acupuncture. When a muscle has been either immobile or overused it may over time develop a trigger point: a taut band within a muscle that causes pain that radiates from the knotted tissue to other local areas. All muscles are susceptible to developing trigger points.
Trigger point acupuncture - also called trigger point dry needling, or orthopedic or sports acupuncture - involves putting a fine needle into the muscle and manipulating it by hand to deactivate the trigger point. An acute spasm is felt in the muscle and a release of tension follows.
We also do electro-acupuncture, which is another method of releasing trigger points. The acupuncturist will put multiple fine needles into a muscle and then run a weak electrical current through them. This allows a continuous steady stimulation throughout the treatment. These treatment modalities, which are available in private sessions, are extremely effective at releasing muscle tension.
